FNGLA WELCOMES CHANGES TO NURSERY CROP INSURANCE
Big news! After literally years in the works with FNGLA’s substantial input and prodding, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Risk Management Agency (RMA) has issued a final rule providing for some dramatic and positive improvements to the federal nursery crop insurance program. Improvements include:

• Making many liners eligible for crop insurance for the first time;
  Treating container & field-grown crops as separate crops for insurance purposes;
  
• Adding flexibility to growers in selecting coverage levels for different plant types;
  
• Changing the crop year to begin June 1st – rather than October 1st – so a hurricane season is covered under one insurance policy rather than split over two; and,
  
• Adding a rehabilitation payment for field-grown plants to compensate for rehabilitation costs for plants that will recover.

These are just some of the highlights of many policy changes. Great progress has been achieved and FNGLA will continue working with RMA and Florida’s congressional delegation for additional needed improvements.
